Assessment Lead Programme – Online

Evidence-based CPD for schools, academies and colleges wanting to harness the power of assessment

What is the Assessment Lead Programme?

The Assessment Lead Programme enables education professionals to make their assessment approach more efficient, allowing them to make more reliable judgements about what pupils know, can do and need next.

By generating and using higher quality information on pupil learning, and better integrating assessment with curriculum and pedagogy, teaching can be more responsive to pupil needs.

It is suitable for any context, stage and setting. The programme will encourage you to re-think your approach to assessment, and support you to lead improvement.

What’s the format?

The programme is flexible, but structured and well-supported. You will enjoy:

  • 50 hours of professional learning aligned with the best available evidence, delivered through our very own innovative and acclaimed online learning platform
  • Tools and resources to guide, support and implement change
  • Structured collaboration and support – you are not alone!
  • Practice opportunities: non-negotiable exercises to scaffold learning – guiding you through the whole process
  • Examples from schools working through the everyday practicalities of implementing an integrated assessment system

Term 1

Develop your assessment knowledge, skills and confidence.

You’ll learn sound assessment theory, building the foundations to help you put your learning into practice.

Term 2

Apply your learning. Get practical and learn from experience.

We will guide you through the process of designing useful, robust assessments – both formative and summative – and then give you the tools, skills, time and opportunity to analyse them.

Term 3

Drive the improvement of assessment quality and practice across departments, and the whole school.

With practice and guidance, you will become an expert in assessment design and analysis, and begin to lead others on the same journey.

All learning material, tools, resources and support are delivered via a personalised and engaging online learning platform. However, the real learning takes place in your school; applying the theory to your individual context, using the resources, working with colleagues to design and refine your assessments and generally honing your skills to harness the power of assessment in your department or phase!

What are the benefits?

The aim is to improve the efficiency of assessment as a tool to improve the quality of information that supports effective teaching and learning.

The programme itself provides a framework for improving a school’s in-house assessment approach, both formative and summative.

It includes evidence-based training, practical tools and resources, guidance for implementation, a collaborative model of development, access to a wide network of participants, and expert support, sustained over time.

The programme activates change on three levels:

Individual practitioners

  • Flexible learning, to fit around your timetable
  • Understand why, when and how to assess
  • Use assessment more effectively to support curriculum planning and pedagogy
  • Be able to design powerful formative questions and quizzes that can be used during teaching to identify pupil misconceptions and learner needs
  • Design formative and summative assessments that are demonstrably reliable in supporting curriculum planning and tracking progress

Within a department or phase

  • Structured collaboration, driven and supported by trained Assessment Leads to link curriculum and pedagogy through effective use of assessment
  • Improve reliability of judgements in both formative and summative approaches
  • Build a bank of powerful formative questions for diagnostic use when planning schemes of work

Across the institution

  • In-house support for teachers’ development in assessment practice
  • A replicable model for activating change with Assessment Leads modelling good practice – taking on the role of ‘expert practitioner’
  • No missed classes, cover or travel costs – flexible learning, at a time and place to suit

Feedback and testimonials

  • We have completed the first three sections of the Assessment Lead Programme and are really enjoying it! It is really clear and I like the fact that it is drip feeding me the information through smaller sections. It is also great to have the ideas founded on reliable research and peer-reviewed articles.

  • Schools desperately need this kind of clear guidance to question the how and the what of their assessment practices. Lots of areas of my direct work will be affected by the Assessment Lead Programme, including pedagogy and supporting schools with learning, curriculum design and questioning their assessment practices.
