Great teaching is full of decisions. Most of them are invisible; leaders see outcomes and teachers experience moments. However, the thinking that connects the two is rarely made explicit – and that makes professional learning harder than it needs to be.
This is why we’ve expanded the Great Teaching Toolkit with a new collection of classroom technique videos designed to make professional judgement visible.
These are not showcase lessons. They are not “tips and tricks”. They are carefully structured explanations of how expert teachers make decisions in real classrooms.
Across the collection, techniques are modelled by a practising teacher and presented through a consistent four-part structure:
- The Approach: an introduction to the technique and the rationale for using it
- In Action: the technique used live in the classroom, with real pupils
- Noticing questions: prompts that guide viewers to attend to key moments and decisions
- The Breakdown: a reflective walkthrough of the classroom footage, explaining the thinking behind the action
This structure matters.
It shifts professional learning away from imitation and towards understanding. Teachers aren’t asked to copy what they see. They’re supported to notice, interpret, and reason about practice; and to consider how similar decisions might play out in their own context.
For leaders, this opens up new possibilities.
These videos can be used to anchor professional dialogue, support coaching conversations, or build a shared language for teaching, without adding to workload or relying on high-stakes observation.
When the thinking behind teaching is made visible, conversations become more precise. Development becomes more purposeful, and improvement becomes something that can be sustained, rather than performed.
Great teaching isn’t just about what happens in the classroom. It’s about the decisions that shape those moments, and those decisions deserve to be seen.
