Developing Great Teaching INSET

The Great Teaching Toolkit: Evidence Review and Model for Great Teaching forms a comprehensive and accessible review of the international research evidence on the things that teachers know and do that have the biggest impact on learning. It has been hugely popular, used in schools and colleges to define and facilitate discussions about developing great teaching.

 

To help promote these important discussions, we’ve developed a free Deliver It Yourself INSET session based on the Review and the Model.ย It includes PowerPoint slides, structured activities, digital materials, instructions and delivery notes.

 

To access the free INSET resources, you will need to either log in to your Great Teaching Toolkit starter account, or create a free starter account.

 

The INSET session enables teachers and leaders to:

  1. Shine a spotlight on the evidence about what great teachers know, do and believe;
  2. Encourage everyone to reflect on, and talk about, teaching practice โ€“ individually, as a department, and as a school; and
  3. Prepare next steps in professional learning.

Session duration: approximately 2 hours, depending on your adaptation โ€“ whether you cut out some activities or allow longer for discussions.

Session structure:

The INSET is formed of four parts and each part includes structured reflection and discussion activities, along with digital materials:

Part 1: identify what great teachers know, do and believe [c.20m]

  • A Model for Great Teaching
  • Reflect on the Model in relation to your own experiences and views

Part 2: explore an element of great teaching [c.30m]

  • Identify and explore one Element from the Model
  • Explain the relevance of that Element in terms of how it supports learning

Part 3: focus and reflect on classroom practice [c.40m]

  • Explore each Dimension of the Model and discuss reflection questions in groups
  • Focus on an Element of great teaching and discuss reflection questions in groups to explore what it looks like in the classroom

Part 4: prepare next steps [c.20m]

  • What are the priorities for development as individuals, as a department, and as a school?
  • Build consensus for next steps
